Under the conditions of sanctions, the path to the West is practically closed for most large Russian banks. And if so, it is necessary to make their way to Asia easier by providing legal protection, according to the participants of the first International Legal Forum “The United Way: Investments and Law in Russia and Asia.”
“I am glad that my Russian colleagues support the One Belt, One Road initiative,” said Ambrose Lam, President of the Global Association of Chinese-Speaking Lawyers (PRC). He expressed hope that through joint efforts all emerging problems will be resolved. They, as he lamented, the organizer of the forum, head of the Russian-Asian Association of Lawyers (RAAU) Maxim Tafintsev, that’s enough.
Despite the fact that Chinese banks, after the introduction of sanctions in 2014, showed understanding for the problems of their Russian colleagues, there are difficulties in making payments for mutual supplies.
“In our bank, 2-4 percent of payments are either returned or do not reach the recipient,” said Maxim Osintsev, head of the department for work with Chinese banks of Sberbank. “Is this a lot or a little? Considering that about 140 thousand of them are processed per year, one can imagine volume for yourself." In addition, Russian business has virtually no protection of its interests in South Korea, explained Boris Sladkov, managing partner of the Korean-Russian trade and investment system CORTIS. And this problem can be solved, including with the help of organizations such as RAAU. Moreover, the Korean authorities have built a powerful system in Russia for the development of Korean business.
